Did you know that piling on the alternative healing or even piling on the supplements can be harmful? Well, they can. People think if they do healthy things it can’t be harmful, but too much of a good thing can be harmful. Heck, too much of anything can be harmful.

Each and every alternative healing modality has a protocol and integration period. You should inquire about the protocol to ensure you are using the modality properly. We tend to have busy schedules and no patience for healing; however, that mentality can be harmful. People have a day off so they try to cram in all their healing work in one day. I have heard it called a spa day or “ME” day. They go for their massage, acupuncture and chiropractic all in one day and that’s NOT OK. Those appointments need to be spread out. The body can’t process all those changes in one day. It needs time to digest each and every one of those appointments. This is very important information to know.

We all think, “oh I can handle it”. Right?! I am guilty of that thought too. It’s not about being strong or healthy. It’s about allowing the body to process information before adding more. I have given the analogy of digesting food. You allow breakfast to digest before you eat lunch. Energy work is the same concept. Allow one to digest before doing another. Here is another analogy. Cramming for tests…scientific studies show that cramming for tests does not help you retain information. Studying the material over time and REALLY learning it helps you retain the information. Energy work is about training the body and providing it information for healing. Doing too much in a short time is like cramming for the test, your body won’t retain the information as effectively as if you did the energy work over time and allowed the body to REALLY learn what you are trying to teach it. Make sense?

The Benefits of Forest Bathing

can forest bathing heal you

Most people these days who live urban, fast-paced lives have no time to stop and breathe. Going around like a clock all the time builds up stress in the mind and the body resulting in various chronic illnesses. Spending time amid nature is, unsurprisingly, a scientifically proven remedy. Unfortunately, city life leaves people with little time to venture out into the greenery. Thankfully, forest bathing has emerged as a healing therapy through which you could rejuvenate your mind and body simply by taking a walk down a thick, wooded area, with ample greenery, soaked in all the goodness of nature.

How to Experiences Forest Baths?

Forest bathing is not a new concept. It originated in Japan back in the 1980s and was locally called ‘Shinrin-Yoku’. With time and more research on its benefits, the therapy has extended to the rest of the world. If you plan on taking a forest bath, here are a few ways to go about it.

Forest Therapy Walks

In Japan, forest therapy walks are predominantly held in thick, coniferous forests; in other regions of the world, the wilderness can vary. For optimum benefits, contact a certified forest therapist who can organize a walk through your area’s best forest regions. The idea is to take slow walks through the thick woods and engage in the sounds and the smells of the surrounding environment. This is not the same as going for a hike but is more of a meditative approach than a vigorous exercise.

For those who do not have access to certified forest therapy tours, you could still organize a forest bath to suit yourself. Any time spent within nature and in the company of trees is known to be beneficial to your overall health. If you have a local garden or a park in your area, go and take advantage of it. Be sure to include earthing techniques in the experience, which means walking barefoot on mud or grass. If your local park is more concrete than natural walkways, however, earthing may not work.

Simulate with Essential Oils

What if you do not have access to either natural forests or local parks? Could you still experience forest bathing from the comforts of your home? Well, it may not be ideal, but incorporating certain essential oils such as rosemary and frankincense in your environment could help simulate the experience. To enhance the feeling of being there in an actual forest, you could fill a room with lively pictures of dense woods and breathe in the essential oils while your eyes soak in the pleasure of the images of the lavish verdure. As an add-on, you could go for a deep tissue massage with sounds from the forest while being engulfed in the woody fragrance of the essential oils.

Simulate with Harmonic Egg

Another way of obtaining similar benefits to forest bathing without stepping into an actual forest is to use a harmonic egg. A harmonic egg is an egg-shaped chamber, as large as a room, where you could recline in a zero-gravity chair while experiencing the harmonious, soothing effects of light, sound, and vibration. The inside of the egg is made with wood, and the shape of the chamber utilizes sacred geometry; used together, both can potentially mimic the feeling of being present within a forest. The use of tonal healing techniques could be applied to modulate the internal atmosphere to sound as close to a natural forest as possible. The use of frequency medicine, which forms an integral part of the harmonic egg, is a well-researched method of healing.

Benefits of Forest Bathing

Let us now look at some of the great things forest bathing could do to your mind and body.

  • Stress Reduction

Forest bathing has been seen to significantly reduce cortisol, the hormone that otherwise remains elevated for those who deal with chronic stress.

  • Improved Immune System

Japanese research has shown that spending time in the woods enhances the natural killer cells in the human body. This effectively arms the immune system to fight against various illnesses.

  • Improved Heart Health

Taking a walk among the dense foliage could significantly lower your blood pressure, thus improving your overall heart health. If you are dealing with hypertension, this is nature’s gift for you.

  • Boosting of Mood and Creativity

Spending time with nature and away from digital distractions could help release hormones that pertain to happiness. Being one with nature might also nurture the creative portion of the brain.

  • The Woods Are Calling

Being surrounded by nature is beneficial to both physical and emotional health. Take some time out of your busy lives to immerse yourself in the arms of Mother Nature and benefit by her abundant gifts of diverse flora. ‘A walk in the park’ is often the simplest way to heal yourself and give yourself the much-needed energy boost.

Scientists are now supporting the claim that Music is Medicine

There are many mindfulness practices to stimulate inner awareness, increase health, and elevate our mood. Now we can add to that list practices such as listening to Mozart with your full being while sipping tea, singing a pop-song out loud while you drive across town, or losing your body to ecstatic dancing. Scientific research now shows us the ways that music has a physiological effect on our bodies and can improve concentration, relieve stress, act as an antidepressant and more.

Music’s beneficial effects on mental health have been known for thousands of years. Ancient philosophers from Plato to Confucius and the kings of Israel sang the praises of music and used it to help soothe stress. Military bands use music to build confidence and courage. Sporting events provide music to rouse enthusiasm. Schoolchildren use music to memorize their ABCs. Shopping malls play music to entice consumers and keep them in the store. Dentists play music to help calm nervous patients.
– Mental Health, Naturally: The Family Guide to Holistic Care for a Healthy Mind and Body

Take a moment and listen to Billie Holiday’s Lady Sings the Blues and you will be transported to another time. Sing along with her and you may ooze with the feelings as if they are your own. Crank up Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and you will be filled with emotions you may have never known existed. This capacity to feel is core to having compassion, yet music also has a profound effect on cognitive processes and learning also.

Listening to music
Music has a profound effect on cognitive processes and learning

Auditory biology is not frozen in time. It’s a moving target. And music education really does seem to enhance communication by strengthening language skills. – Nina Kraus, the Hugh Knowles Professor of Communication Sciences, Neurobiology & Physiology, and Otolaryngology at Northwestern University as well as the principal investigator at the Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory

Musical entrainment

Musical entrainment creates connection both internally and externally which can be seen when watching a whole crowd dance to a live band, or the people around you sobbing at an opera. Science explains this as an aspect of mirror neurons, which are a form of mimicking that can happen emotionally and physically. Maybe a song will give you chills, make you cry, or spontaneously start jamming on an air guitar, or dancing uncontrollably. In the study, The Neuroscience of Music, published by the Department of Psychology at McGill University, Montreal, researchers found preliminary scientific evidence supporting claims that music influences health through neurochemical changes in four domains: reward, motivation and pleasure; stress and arousal; immunity; and social affiliation.

Woman listening to music
Listening to music has potentially therapeutic effects

The potential therapeutic effects of music listening have been largely attributed to its ability to reduce stress and modulate arousal levels. Listening to ‘relaxing music’ (generally considered to have slow tempo, low pitch, and no lyrics) has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety in healthy subjects, patients undergoing invasive medical procedures (e.g., surgery, colonoscopy, dental procedures, pediatric patients undergoing medical procedures, and patients with coronary heart disease.
The Neurochemistry of Music

Human cultural universal

It is no surprise that music has been used in ritual and ceremony since the beginning of time. Women share playlists for the delivery room to welcome new life. You can even higher a hospice harpist to help the transition from a terminal disease. Music education has also been shown to help children’s developing brains. So it is only natural to place it in a category for mindfulness, meditation, and healing.

Music is a language of energy, a “vibe” of emotions and joy. It speaks to our core desires and feelings. It speaks to our core desires and feelings. It spans language barriers and political borders, making it a powerful means through which humans can connect.
– Patrick Groneman

Crowd listening to musicMusic is a powerful means through which humans can connect

Music is also a reflection of culture. In today’s world we are experiencing an unprecedented fusion of ideas through the internet and technology. We are re-mixing historical themes, embellishing forgotten ideas and combining belief systems across time and societies. For instance, electronic dance music has captured wide acclaim as DJs and producers improvise with musical tools that have the ability to drop samples, mix, change tempo and induce ecstatic states of consciousness. This music has become central to the emerging transformational, or visionary culture that is influencing our world view through integrating art, spirituality and technology.

As with everything else, it is our conscious intention or lack of it, that makes the difference in our experience.Try exploring new music when you want to get out of a rut. Just as you are what you eat, you should choose your music wisely because it is influencing the way you feel whether you notice it or not.
